Bucharest, Romania Church Travel Guide

With such an intense and diverse history, any travel lover will want to come to Bucharest, Romania. Because of this history, a fascinating range of churches can be found all over the city. Every Bucharest travel guide must include this aspect of the city. Culture, religion and architecture collide in the churches. Below, we include a list of some of the more important and interesting churches in the city. No Bucharest travel experience would be complete without a visit to at least some of these.

First, the Caşin Church is a large, 20th century church, built in 1935, located near the Arcul de Triumf. It is a Romanian Orthodox church in a vaguely Byzantine style, dedicated to the archangels Michael and Gabriel. It also has interesting and particular Romanian features, such as elaborate allegorical mosaics using marble from the provinces. Any travel plans to Bucharest must include this modern church.

The oldest Catholic church in Bucharest is called Bărăţia. Many Catholic churches have stood in its location, and the current one was finished in 1848. The bell, in particular, is known for its pleasant sounds.

A new Cathedral for the Salvation of Romanian People will be finished construction soon. It will be one of the largest churches in Romania, and not every Bucharest, Romania travel guide will mention it.

Interestingly, there are a number of difference cultures that have established their own churches. Here is a travel guide to some of those other Bucharest churches:

  • A typical-looking Anglican church with a weekly English language service has a façade in red brick.
  • The Italian government owns a Catholic church on Nicolae Bălcescu Blvd., the city's busiest street. It holds services in Romanian, Russian, German, Polish, and of course, Italian masses.
  • The Bucharest Russian Church is the largest in Romania, an attempt by Imperial Russia to enhance their cultural influence.
